WFMW : Fun Teaching Money

Yes, it's WEDNESDAY!!!! So off to We are That Family for great WFMW tips!!

Anna completed a math Kindergarten workbook that contained a few pages of beginning counting money... it used only pennies, nickels and dimes. The few pages though wasn't enough practice for us!!

So we play a fun little game, we call "store". For her "afterschool treats" she can "purchase" her treat using the coins she practices to count money with. Each treat has a value and Anna has to "give" me the correct amount of change to "purchase" what she wants.

From the picture, you can see that she also likes to get a "treat" for Christopher and Lydia when we play!! I know it's all candy and sweets.... but we don't play everyday. And while the kids enjoy candy, we still have Easter candy in the cupboards!!

Anyway, it could be made more diffcult for older children, like dollars or more coins. I really liked how practical it was and how much Anna enjoys playing "store". While she obviously knows that she's counting coins... I'm not sure she recognizes it as practicing her math skills:) And it Works for US to practice skills with a game that the kids look forward to playing!!!

I can't tell what the chart is from the picture. But it is great that you are able to use manipulatives to teach money.
