Potty Trained:)

So Nate is fully potty trained... like take him out around the town, let him nap in undies and even a dry diaper most nights! It was totally NOT me....

in fact...

After Christmas, Nate began saying to me," Mommy, me need to do potty."

And I'd be mentally somewhere else (like picking out groceries) or physically busy (like totally in the middle of breading chicken or something) so I'd call back, "Nate it's ok, you have a diaper... just go in your diaper." Yep, parenting at it's highest level:/

Finally Nate started taking off his diaper and climbing onto the potty and just doing it!!

I dreaded #2s .... he just did it!!

I wondered when to start teaching him to stand up (like when he's 10?? LOL!) ... he started that last week!

I did offer treats as reminders and I wondered when I'd have to take away the treats... many times last week he stopped asking, for the most part! This weekend he was treated with more candy, so pottying has been a good excuse for him to enjoy them!

I have to admit that I feel a little lost now that Nate is potty trained??  For almost 9 years (in May Anna will be 9!) I have changed a dirty diaper every day... at least one! And for the last almost 4 weeks I think I've had one.. maybe??

In some ways, it's a nice change:) Less diapers (still using them at night, though I think he's wanting to wear underwear then, too) and it's a lot easier while we're out for Nate just to use the potty when we do!!

But in a very real way, we really now feel like there isn't a baby in the house anymore... there is a kind of "sad" feeling, too! Anyway....

I know waiting until kiddos are 2.5 isn't really ideal, I mean who wants to buy diapers for that long and no telling what they would say about him in an preschool program! But I tell you, now that I've had my 2nd child potty train themselves, there is definitely something to waiting until the kiddos are ready!!

While reading with Nate I realized that he has been calling all females in books "Mommy" and all males "Daddy". The only differentiation is he calls little kids "babies"! It super cute... but don't try to correct him because he is adamant that he is right!

Not Napping, but Pottying

I've always been a nap encourager:) In fact, some of my "bigger" kids would still take a nap if I had them take a "quiet time" during the day... which I really need to phase back into the afternoon... somewhere:/

For months now Nate has been a non-napper. Most of the reason is that we use the time to run errands and that I spoil him by staying in the room with him until he falls asleep. And we had been using the time it took him to fall asleep as read aloud time (a sweet hour of the day) until the stillness made me sleepy too;)

The ending of our read aloud/Nate falls asleep time was due to the fact that in the evenings, after he had a nap, he would be up to 11-12 at night!!! Yes, when the older ones would head to bed Nate would be wide-eyed... while we'd read in bed all the older ones would crash and Nate would look at us and say, " I go downstairs with you, now!" Not quite the relaxing evenings parents look forward to during the busy days... especially since Brian and I use our evenings to work:/

Nate actually does very well without a nap... sure he can get fussy at 8ish... but that's totally reasonable for a tired 2 yr old. Anyway, we're working on some solutions...

Two days last week he came up with his own plan of crashing on the couch at 6-6:30 and sleeping through the night:) Definitely shows that this little guy NEEDS sleep... even when he fights it hard:)

This week he had us all laughing as he fell asleep eating a bowl of cereal at 6:30ish pm... it was the only thing he wanted to eat!I call it "picking my battles":)


After the video I cleaned him up, changed him into a diaper and laid him on the couch to be with everyone else... he totally fell soundly back to sleep, I moved him upstairs about 9ish (and brushed his teeth) and he slept through the night.

He woke me up at 6:45am with a dry diaper because he needed to go potty:) 

Oh yes!! He's doing that too:) Gotta love kid-led potty training... he was ready without me!! Totally awesome and it's been very easy (besides tending to the tot on the pot with 3 kiddos needing to be schooled)....

NEVER thought I'd say that!!

Another Round of Potty Training

I'm not a good potty trainer:/ I think it's because many times when I've tried to train my kids ended up either constipated or I was "trained". So after two attempts of doing it when I was ready...

I finally came up with a new plan:)

Wait until they ask and are ready!!

So I"m both delighted and not completely ready for this stage with Nate!! But he wants to be ready:)

And yes we use candy (jelly beans or a few smarties)... he loves candy and will find ways to get into it through the day. So now we're making him "work" for a treat:)

WFMW: what's in our van & gas tank help!

While it feels like we PACK everything in the house when we head off for an afternoon...

there are a few things we find sooo important on a trip (even a quick one) that we just keep in the van:)

The potty seat is a must have.... it's more like our kids' traveling porta john with the wipes and handsanitizer right there!



There have been plenty of times we've made it through the store and as soon as we get to the car a kiddo has to potty... not about to drag all 4 back into the store:) Or when the park potty is a hike away and I have the kids by myself.

And NO that's not reading material... LOL!!! We have a workbook in the car. It's actually a fun little book that the kids and I have worked in while waiting in the car for Brian to visit at the hospital or grab some groceries.













My other favorite carry-alongs are in the passenger door pocket!!! Gotta have some

• Deo on-the-go


• Simple first aid kit


• Hairbrush


• Bug Spray


• and usually we have some sunscreen tucked in there, too!

And of course you already know about THIS... right?

In vehicles near your gas gauge there is a picture of a gas dispenser. I figured it told us which gauge is which.... but not so!!

I learned from husband, who learned from my random-knowledge-and-useful-fact knowing mother, that the picture of the gas dispense is actually telling you what side of the car your gas tank is located.

WHOA!! Did you know that??

Tiny Talk Tuesday

I'm starting to get the feeling that my kids are tired of me being tired:)

After repeated requests for something to drink. And my response being,"Just a minute."
Lydia (3 yrs): "Mommy, you have to stand up, to get me some juice."

Or any of my two youngest....
"Mommy, I'm done my stinky!" - hollered from the bathroom for the 100th time
Me: "I'm coming" - as I fight off the ligament cramps and get to the bathroom.
Their response: "I'm still waiting."

And I shared a Christopher joke last week, he's still at it!!

This time looking through his kiddie Bible, stopping at Jesus calming the storm.
Chris (4 yrs): Why did the stunk (aka skunk) get in the boat?
Us: ????
Chris: He wanted to make it a stinky boat. (And of course he laughs thinking it's a funny joke! We've got a wanna be comedian on our hands!!!)

This might be a "not me, Monday confession"!! But while eating spaghetti this week, Anna asked," Does this sauce have potatoes in it?"

Knowing what she was really trying to ask and that she depises tomatos and wouldn't finish her dinner, I only responded to the question she ASKED and not what she wanted to ask!! By the way, I had blended the sauce even more in an attempt to "hide" the tomatos... must have missed a few!!! So I said, "no."

She accepted the response and happily ate her food.

Then the next day while eating leftover spaghetti, Anna pulled out a chunk of tomato and said, "Mommy, I though you said it didn't have tomatos?" And I had to explain to her how I had tried to "trick" her when she had asked about potatos:)

Chris has been a very expressive kid:) But we got a chuckle this week as Lydia was hollering from the bathroom for help cleaning up. Brian looked at Chris trying to be serious and said, "Looks like you have to go clean her up!"

Chris looked up to the ceiling and rolled his eyes. Then he said,"Oh, brother!" LOL!!! So funny!!

We called the kids in for dinner this week. Chris came in but then stuck his head outside to holler something at Anna. He came in looking frustrated and so we asked him what was wrong. He responded, "Anna is not complying."

LOL!! We then asked what he meant and sure enough he had used the word "comply" correctly!!! Gotta love some PBSkids and Martha Speaks:)

Diaper-free Girl:)

Lydia is my "potty training" wonder.... she wanted to potty train when I was working with Christopher. The month she turned two she had accompished being potty trained during the day!! Soon after she began asking to wear "big girl pants" (BGP) during naptime... oh, I dreaded her waking wet, but I went with it and we've had only s few accidents.

She's been dry at night for MONTHS... many months!! I would ask her to try BGP but she was always unwilling. Finally a few weeks ago, Lydia and I had a talk:) I encouraged her to "try" the BGP at night! Then we made a simple little chart tracing her hands and putting stickers on each fingernail for each morning she woke dry:)

She went 10 days (two hands... LOL!!) without ANY accidents at night!!! Sometimes NOT wanting to have BGP, but the security of a diaper....

but there was a prize!!! Like Anna, we told her that we'd bring her to the store to pick out a toy:) And for 10 days she talked about a Polly Pocket... LOL!! But when she got to the store, she changed her mind;)

As a Momma expecting another little bottom to diaper, I am VERY excited to have one less kiddo in diapers:) And I was sooo proud of my little determined girl.... she has been the EASIEST with the potty by FAR!!

Stinky Success..... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

HE DID IT!!!!Yes, Christopher is now making stinkies in the potty!!! I am sooo thankful and amazed that we are finally at this point....lol

I think the "end of potty training" started a couple of weeks ago when I was just FLAT OUT tired of cleaning stinky messy underwear! So I took it away....lol!!! I did (with some encouragement from others). He DID NOT like it!! But we had a week free of messy underwear...lol.. because he didn't have any:)

Last week had VBS.... so I did give him back his underwear for most of the week. And we didn't have any memorable messes:) YAY... instead he was using his bedtime diaper...grrr!

Well Saturday he complained that his stomach hurt and we gently reminded him that it was probably his body telling him he needed to use the potty. Sure enough after his bath he jumped on the potty and DID IT!!!! Whooo-hooooo!!!

Even though it was reading/bedtime we let him have an Italian Ice while we read:) He loved it:) It was a nice treat for a little boy who didn't have ANY sweets (except for grandmas, church socials and neighbors giving him candy at church)!!

The other thing of Christopher "Success" to-do list was to call Grandma!! (he called Grammie to celebrate his Sunday AM success....lol... the joys of grandparenting)

The funniest thing about the video is he delight in telling in Grandma....lol!! But I thought I'd mention that Brian got on the phone int he other room and told Christopher he was with Grandma... Christopher ran out of the room to go "find" Brian. Of course Brian was just sitting in the office;)

YAY, for Chris!!! And I'll have to say that it really took waiting for him to just DO IT:)

Nothing Keeps Him Down

Well sadly, Chris didn't get to go with Daddy and his sisters today....

He seemed not to care until the girls were getting on their shoes.... and then that caught his attention.... but it didn't happen, so Chris and I got to spend some time together.

I wanted to enjoy my time with him, but at first I was determined to have a normal afternoon with him and do some cleaning that would free up some of time time on Saturday.

So the first thing Christopher and I did was clean the bathroom. I gave him the job of scrubbing the tub. I gave him the scrub brush and some handsoap and he went after it.... he loved scrubbing the tub! He had a blast.... he NEVER asked to be finished... LOL

Then I told him I had to vaccum and so he gladly sat at the table and did some "handwriting" (at least that is what he called it)! I vaccumed a little and then I felt bad, so I sat with him and had a blast!! I picked up my camera and taped a little bit.... soo funny and cute!!

I was thankful for our alone time together! I was reminded how much fun Christopher is! He never seems to let anything "get him down"! He is just one of the most fun-loving kids I know:)

Potty Training & Garden Intruders

NOt sure what everyone is in the mood to hear today... what will inspire????

The day for me has been potty training and working in the garden:)

I feel like something has to change with potty training... either he completes this journey or diapers!! LOL... Seriously though, a year of washing out stinky underwear has brought me to this... LOL!!

For a while we have restricted Chris from sweets until he was potty trained. What happens though is that we will not have dessert while Christopher is limited.... so last night while outside after dinner I let the girls have their treat...

Yes, this is what I saw, the girls giving Chris licks of their popsicles!!! They are soo compassionate toward their brother.... I am thankful for that. But I guess it's not much of a restriction if your sisters give you some of theirs:)

So this week we told Little Man that all the kids that make stinky in the potty get to "go out" with Daddy!! So the girls immediately realized that they could go!!!!! Chris was a little disappointed at the requirement, but we told him that he'd have two days to "TRY". Yesterday, he was told that TONIGHT was the NIGHT... he'd have today; until they left to "do the deed". Unfortunately, so far it's not looking good!!

To help him out, Wedneday, Thursday and today I kept him close. I tried my best to have him at my side at all times.... THIs is SOO HARD! Anyway, days he's get away from me for a second a couple of times, hid and then we're in the bathroom scrubbing out pants again!!

I really think keeping him close though has helped some.... so maybe I'll keep it up!! I'm thinking he'll get SICK of having to stand or play next to me and that will be the motivation to use the potty!! LOL!!

Onto the garden... I haven't spent ANY time in my garden this year... it stinks because I really do enjoy having the garden looking nice. I didn't plant ANYTHING this year and my garden is FULL of flowers:) But embarassingly overgrown!!!!

Besides the HUGE weeds intruding into my garden.... I found this little guy!! We've always called these... butterfly moths!! Anyway, I think they are soo cute, but HARD to photography b/c of how quickly they move:)

I have gotten some weeds pulled up this morning.... but the garden and potty training need a lot more attention!!! Looks like we have our weekend cut out for us:)

Random Picture Challenge

The Challenge today from 4 Little Men and Girly Twins is September 2008 (9th folder) and 18th picture!

I was actually giggling when I saw this picture... not much has changed!!! Here is Christopher in Big Boy Pants on the phone telling Grandma that he made a "stinkY" in the potty.... let's say Grandma and Grammie are still getting sporadic calls from Chris "celebrating"....



It's NOT that he doesn't know how... maybe he doesn't know "when" OR he's just NOT motivated. I haven't figured it out yet....

After Anna's constipation issues when she was potty training, I MUCH more laid back with #2 with Christopher. Anna took a while (and many tears b/c I pushed her too hard) before she just "got it" one day. And once she initiated #2 on the potty we were finished with potty training. So, I'm giving Christopher PLENTY of opportunities to get to the potty for a success and hoping his "got it" day comes SOON... with not many messes until then.... LOL

And we'll continue to encourage him and celebrate in the small successes!

BTW... each kid is soo different. My little Lydia (was 2 in January) potty trained herself in early February. She does all of her messes in the potty. In the morning she takes herself to the bathroom and changes out of her completely DRY diaper!! The overnight dryness has been happening for a MONTH... she's totally the opposite to my full diaper in the morning Little Boy:)

Oh, My Little Man

While tucking in our little man tonight we thought,"How can something soo sweet and cute be such a mess???"

* At during service he had to be taken out TWICE... I had to have sit next to me b/c he was on the floor poking at people's shoes. Needless to say, he was NOT happy about the change in seating.

* While on the trampoline with some friends he's jumping in his tighty-whites only... his originals "got wet".

* He assured me he went potty before he climbing to his bed for a nap. He woke SOAKED!! And because he was under his comforter he was also drenched with sweat:)

* Lydia comes running to be saying that "Christopher has BIG stinky". So I got into his room and he is still... so I bring him to the potty.... and he made the rest in the POTTY... whoo hooo... Thank you LITTLE SIS!!

* After making a stinky... he tries to shove his favorite ball into the potty... yes, it got stinky!

* And that is NOT including all the times he had to hand us a toy he was aiming at his sisters.

* Finally as I was getting his diaper on for the night. I noticed that he was drinking something (after his teeth were brushed, of course). He says, "Mom, it's fresh!" Then I realize it's the chocolate soymilk that I fixed for him for Sunday School at 10am.... ewwwwww!! Fresh? right

I adore my little man!! He definitely keeps us on our toes and our patience is tested daily!!! But I couldn't imagine a day with out his goofy giggles, his wild stories, his adventurous spirit, love of life and yes, even a few snuggles and kisses when I can sneak them in:)

We are exhausted... LOL I don't know if it was because Chris was soo mellow last week from sickness or what... but he's been into EVERYTHING this week.

He's starting the back-and-forth, who-gets-the-last word arguments with his sisters. Like this,

"You only get one." Chris to Lydia.

Lydia: "No, I get two."

Chris: "You get one."

Lydia: "no, two"

Chris: "No, one."

AHHHHHH!!!

And then there is the crazy antics..... now he usually has some helpers.

But he's the one with the BLUE feet (like, "i caught you red-handed").... yes, seriously! He and Lydia were coloring Chris' body with blue (and green) markers... thank goodness they were Crayola... all of it came off without soap!!

This morning, he came out of his room in just undies wiping something on his skin. Hoping it was just a Wipe, I asked him what it was....

"Sunscreen, " he responded. Hmmm?? "Chris, I don't have any sunscreen out. What are you rubbing all over your skin?"

"Umm? Sunscreen," he says, then adds, "it's kind of like bubbles."

So as I"m cleaning up dinner the little rascals are terrorizing the house... usually one parent has kids the other has clean-up, but Brian had a meeting tonight so the kids were crazy! I hear a door shut and then the girls trying to talk to Chris. Anna comes into the kitchen to inform me that Christopher had "locked himself in his room"... ahhh about time... LOL

He wasn't crying or scared so I left him while I finished the kitchen:) As the girls got ready for some playtime outside, I went to Christopher's door and asked if he was ready to come out. He said he was. So I reminded him how to turn the "button on the knob".

I heard the doorknob move around and then out of the room he walked. With the BIGGEST stinky EVER making a bump in his underpants.... I guess he needed time "alone"!!





Yes... I will keep him. And yes he is my son, although I think he looks more like his Dad... LOL!! I'm sure there is another boy out there who is as adventurous, mischievous, dirty and fun-loving as my Christopher.



But with a house full of girls during the day, he finds a way to bring in some mischief and antics, just to keep us entertained! And Momma on her toes!

Updates

The first is a BIG thank you for your prayers!

Grandma came out of surgery and is doing well. The pain medication will be gradually diminished over the next day and so we are praying for no discomfort. And she'll be heading home,too!! So we are praying for that transition as well. And for Grandaddy who will caring for her during her recovery:)

Our friends and neighbors had their father pass away on Monday morning. They will be gathering with family and friends this week. We also are planning to travel a bit and attend the services. We continue to pray for their peace and comfort during this loss.

Another, lighter update is that Lydia has completed her Train Potty Chart... whoo-hooo!! She's doing soo well potty training. Her prize at the end is to pick out a Dora DVD (since she's missing the one she broke in half). Looks like Dora will be back in the house SOON:)

And for those who care, as soon as she put the LAST sticker on her chart she said, "Me get a Dora video." They remember!!!

Where is Lyddddiaaaa?

When the house is quiet I HAVE to check on the kids and what they are up to. Anna working on straightening her room. Christopher quietly playing with books in his room.

But where is Lydia??



In my bathroom, sitting on the potty!! Of course!!

ALL my kids loved flipping through the Reader's Digest as they sit on the potty. It's the right size for their little laps and always has a variety of pictures for them to name.

NOt sure if RD will ever use that for their advertising!! LOL

Don't you like the evidence that she dressed herself. Gotta love the tag sticking out the front of her shirt!

A Glimpse of our Weekend Potty Training

Let me first explain that the charts were brought out after successes and more interest was shown by BOTH kids!!!

But the weekend was another pottying challenged weekend.

Chris just needs something to motivate him! I have tried a lot of things, but nothing seems to really encourage him to try.

The verse that repeat itself in my head was "your sin will find you out"... the reasoning was that Chris would have dirty pants but pretend that he was fine and clean. No one would know until he'd run by us... yuck.


Lydia loves her chart. She does her business. Announces it to everyone. Asks for 2 stickers. Then asks for her gummies...LOL

And her little phrases are just too cute! "I made my stinky, I get two gummies now." And then she flashs that little smile just to be sure she'll get her gummies.

This isn't potty training related, but my other favorite phrase of Lydia's has to do with the penny jars (for good manners).

Lydia pretends to cough. "augh augh" Then she says,"Cuse me...[not even a breath] I get a penny in me jar."

Return of the Gummies

For weeks Lydia has been neglecting her potty training. She doesn't remember to go potty on her own. And it's a hassel to bring her when she doesn't want to go..... so she's been wetting through them and I've been trying to keep up with the laundry.

The challenging part is that she is very, very capable to stay dry... she's had Grandaddy pull over before in order to stay dry!

In desperation this week, I pulled out the gummy worms and bears again! So when Lydia uses the potty we praise her and then after she cleans up she gets her gummies.

Believe it or not, but it's working! And with #2 also. She has some BIG messes on Monday, but last night and today she has been busy on the potty with #2s!!! YAY!! What a huge difference today, no wet or dirty pants!!!

And a even better "present" this evening. After putting the kids in bed at 9pm, I had all sorts of noise and bumping at 10pm!! Christopher came walking into the living room with an announcement.... Yes!! He too had done his business in the potty!! WOW.... it wasn't much but it was the initiative and interest he took. The fact that he got himself to the potty and that I didn't have to scrub out another pair if undies, are also great :)

So I've been thinking of bringing out a "stinky chart" and when he completes the chart we can do something fun.... I think he'd love something simple like camping in his tent in the living room one night!! Sounds like fun to me:)

The Pee-pee Walk

Lydia is in a weird stage with potty training... some days, in some places she is soo very consistent and TELLS us when she needs to potty. BUt on laid-back days at home or at the park, she has the most accidents... at home??? Isn't that the opposite of how it works....LOL

A Realistic Attempt to Exercise, Starfall!!

This morning I was chatting with Andrea about my attempts to exercise at 8am with the kids running around! I can usually get at least 30+ minutes in before the kids need mommy's full attention..... well THIS morning was a little different!

Anna wanted to start school about 8:20am! SO as I was setting up my exercise DVD, I setup the computer with Starfall so she could start working. Lydia was finishing her breakfast and Christopher was running around and playing in his room..... started well....

After a few minutes with me NOT totally paying attention to her, Anna's use of Starfall just got silly and she was totally off-task... so I made the "executive decision" to let her play until I was ready to give her my full attention.... cool... 15 more minutes of exercise...

Then Christopher comes into the living room saying sweetly, "Mommmmmmyyy, I have a surprise for YOUUUUU!!" He was holding a gross, full of stinky diaper!!!! I guess he figured he'd take care of his own stinky since i was busy????

He FILLED the toilet with wipes (not the flushable type) and he had stinky alll over his bottom, down his legs (from takig off his diaper) and mysteriously on his stomach!! EWWWW.....

So basically I was DONE with exercising for the morning.... I made it 28 minutes...grrr... Christopher got a bath, the wipes were rescued from the toilet BEFORE they clogged the pipes and the kids got Momma's attention or the rest of the morning:)

Sometimes moments like this made me want to scream!!!

But then I thought of Christopher's proud little face when he came into the living room with his stunky diaper in hand. He REALLY thought I would be proud of him for trying to clean himself!!! So instead of getting mad at him, I got to remind him that I need to change him when he wants to wear diapers.... if he wants to do it himself he needs to use the potty!!

Hopefully your Monday has been a little less exciting????

Onto something cleaner...LOL... we used Starfall for teaching individual letters.... I let Christopher and Lydia sit on my lap and pick a couple of letters to watch and play. Then Christopher does the 3 workbook pages that corresponds to one of the letters we saw on Starfall! This morning I realized that Starfall has print off pages for each letter as well!!! They are very simple!! But the kids cut out "P" words from a magazine and glued them on one of the pages.... anyway, a fun, free resource!!!

In Their Time

For MONTHS I've been attempting to potty train Christopher (and Lydia). After Christmas both just decided to wear underwear and have been doing WONDERFUL (minus Lydia's pee-pee on the floor Friday and BMs).

On Saturday Christopher was pottying and then announced, "I have to make a stinky." And then just out of the blue climbed on the potty and did "the deed"!! Brian and I were in and out of the room getting cleaned up for the day and Christopher did it all on his own....

Last night during choir practice I had both Lydia and Chris announce that they had to potty. I took BOTH up to the nursery bathroom and they BOTH made BMs in the potty....

I've been offering the kids all sorts of "prizes" for this BIG event!! LOL But really it needed to happen "in their time"!!!

I'm sure if I would have kept track of when they usually had their BMs I could ahve scooped them up and given them this "victory"! But would they have continued????

I LOVE that they BOTH have shown initiative int his area:) I look forward to a cleaner and less diaper dependent week. But I'm also have low expectations with a goal to encourage even MORE!!
