Hiccup in the Kitchen

we didn't get to make our viking bread last weekend... thankfully our history still had vikings invading other countries, so we could make our bread and finish reading through some of our viking materials:)

So on Tuesday, "Hiccup" and his little sister eagerly joined me in the kitchen:)
The bread was made with very simple ingredients... one was oats, grounded up...
so we did some grinding... modern style;)
The other ingredients included whole wheat flour, white flour, baking soda, salt and water!!
Very simple!
After mixing it up with a wooden spoon, we have to knead it;)
The kids loved mashing it:)
Sweet little hands... even little hands with marker stains from morning work!!
They decided to taste some... before baking!!
They had a BLAST...
and because it was an easy recipe and part of our school work
( no stress to get through the process quickly)
I let them have fun and I took pics;)
win-win

And look at the mess those vikings left....
Oh!!! The delicious smells coming from the warm oven on a cool day &
kids excitedly playing while waiting for the loaf to finish...
Wonderful:)
Now.... how do you eat Viking Bread??? LOL!!
With jam and butter of course:)

I enjoyed a warm slice with some sunflower seed butter.... soo good;)

The theme for You Capture this week is WARM.

And I loved taking pics of ...
*our warm oven
*warmness between the little viking chefs
*the delicious warm bread
*the reminder of the beauty of simple tasks done together... warms my heart!

Better a dry crust eaten in peace
than a house filled with feasting—and conflict.

this looks and sounds like so much fun. Maybe the kids can make me some Viking bread when they come this way!

Yum! Any chance you can post or send me the recipe? Seems like one I can use and/or adapt slightly. And I've kinda been hankerin' a bread lately. Love the pics! You are doing a great job with that camera :)

What a wonderfully fun thing to do for school! When I taught kindergarten we made butter by shaking a jar with cream all day one day. That was fun. I am sure it was not nearly as delicious as your bread though. YUM!

What a great hands on lesson! Any way you could post the recipe? That would be so much fun to try! I know your kids will never forget these fun "get your hands into it" lessons!
