Weekly Wrap-Up: Beethoven and Math Facts

It was definitely a summer week;) We played outside each morning and did little with school or housework until it got really hot outside and Mom limited the popsicle intake... LOL!!

It was nice to get a "break" and let school go for a couple of days! But I quickly realized that I was also letting the discipline go as well and by Wednesday I felt like I needed to purchase a referee shirt!!!

So summer isn't just going to be "letting go" :( We're going to have to work through some "not fun" habits that have crept back into our home... whining, not completing chores completely and not playing kindly with siblings. It was getting me down that these things are back....

but then I read some encouraging words somewhere saying that seeing "trouble spots" in your family, your thoughts, your words, etc, allows you the opportunity to FIX it! So were going into the fixing it full steam with Momma trying to see these things as character building, practicing manners and learning experiences and NOT just disobedience or forgetfulness :)

Bible
We are almost finished with the Bible storybook... it feels awesome to think that we actually completed a book until the end!! And it's especially sweet that it means we have been regularly reading through some of these greatest moments of Jesus' life and the start of the Church. We have all enjoyed our "Bible time".

And I finally settled on going through and memorizing the Lord's Prayer with the kids. I thought they already knew it but when I asked them to recite it, they didn't know it! So why not learn something so well-known and teach us all again about prayer;) Since the kids are starting to read more and more, we made bookmarks with the verses so they could practice on their own!!

Language Arts
So this is basically just reading for the summer;) Although I have three older kiddos who love to copy books or write their own stories... so there will be plenty of handwriting and "Mom, how to you spell?"  as well!
And this week Anna wrote thank you notes for birthday gifts;)

Lydia, Chris and I SLACKed the beginning of the week. But Thursday and Friday we DID pull out OPG for some reading lessons. Chris completed 2 and Lydia did at least 3 (once she gets started it's hard to get her to stop)!!

Anna's reads this week : American Girls book: Changes for Samantha, A Lion to Guard Us by Bulla and found her re-reading Black Beauty (she loves that book)!

Math
So our journey with just doing math facts has begun... well mid-week;) We've decided to focus on math facts this summer since I now have 3 kiddos learning them and because when Anna was tested I saw our need to practice more. Let me first say that usually the kids can figure out all the addition/subtraction (and Anna multiplication/division) facts on their own.... but they can't do it fast! And usually resort to using counters, their fingers or a number line. I thought it was fine... but was convinced by the test and the test administrator that having the kids become sharp and confident with math facts now was one of the best things we could do with them to help them with math later on:)

IMG_9205

We have lots of ways to practice them this summer!! Thankfully I already had most of these resources, I just haven't been disciplined enough for the kids to pull them out during the school year :( So let me share what we have and will be using;)
  • Addition/Subtraction BINGO game
  • Wrap-Ups
  • Flash cards from Saxon curriculum
  • Mad minute sheets (add/subtract made by me, mult/division used from here)
  • mathfactpractice.com
  • xtraMath I saw this on the Well-Trained Mind Forum. It's a free program to help kids practice their facts and sends reports to the parents weekly! My kids like computer activities and this will be nice  that it's online with no books/papers/manipulatives to mess with when we are in the thick of the move. The goal is for them to practice daily... so that is nice too... getting them in the habit of practicing! I will add that they are wanting to be fast, so I have been typing the answers for them... but it's good for me to see them at work and provide some encouragement :)

History
While studying about Napolean, we also look a little into the life of Beethoven. The kids colored a page, we listened to some pieces of Beethoven and the kids and I looked through a HUGE biography of him... mostly skimming major parts and reading the captions under the pictures.

I did find some fun composer websites for kids:
DSO Kids - Beethoven
Making Music Fun - Beethoven

They also lasted almost 20 minutes.... LOL!!... watching a documentary about Beethoven on Netflix. I like all the exposure they got to his pieces and some of the events/stories behind those pieces! I know I learned a ton!!

We worked on our maps of the world of Napolean, including his battles with England and the Lousianna Purchase. And played a review game of the chapter.

I think I mentioned the book Why Not, Lafayette by Jean Fritz last week! We finished it this week and  I really recommend that book during this time period ! I've known the name Lafayette for many years, but the book really did bring him to life. So it you have studied the American Revolution, the French Revolution or even Napolean... find a copy of this book to see how everything fits together in the lifetime of this one unique character of world history!

Science
IMG_9192We did no formal science although I set out science books for us to use :(

One morning though the kids rescued a bird from the cats:/

The kittens were desperate to "play" with the little bird. And the kids were soo passionate about saving the bird. We talked about the fact that cats go after birds... that's the way our kitties were made.

I think they would have had a different reaction if we had found a dead bird that the kittens had gotten. But to have a little bird hopping around the yard and watching the cats bat at it brought on a totally different set of emotions and ideas.

Other
During some of our rainy afternoons we pulled out some other fun:)

Chris worked with the Lite Bright:)

Anna and I had bought a cross stitch set to learn to cross stitch after reading about samplers in Colonial America! It seemed like we could never find the time...
IMG_9199

and to be honest, none of my natural talents are in sewing, crocheting, quilting or cross stitch.  But we started though and we'll see how long it takes us this summer. And it's fun to have a project to complete with Anna;)

Mom, I Don't Want You to be a Snake

IMG_9514We walked by a little, swampy stream after soccer practice last week. And Chris asked,"Mom, do you think there are snakes in there?"

It was a chilly night, so as we walked by I answered," Yep. But if I was a snake, I'd be looking for a place to hibernate!"

And then the conversation was quiet for a moment.

Chris answers back, "Mom, I don't want you be a snake... your a good mom!... I mean you do stuff that is mean sometimes, but I don't care. You're still a good mom!!"

The conversation was very sweet, revealing and convicting. I had just written about how I long to be a joyful, loving mother that week and then earlier in the day I had "lost it"... finding fault with everything and really showing an ugly attitude.

Sure, my simple requests of the children had been disregarded. Messes left in every room. Chores left undone. Whining instead of obedience. And a busier schedule due to soccer practice.

Not to mention... a meal to prepare and have ready when we returned from soccer practice. A van left half cleaned (because the little helpers got bored of the job!). A project that the kids had gotten into and I had to fix before I could complete it!!

But those are all excuses...

I have the ability (only through the Holy Spirit) to choose to be loving, gentle, kind and longsuffering.

I choose...  and too often I choose wrongly! And my kids know!!

I am thankful they know. They know I love the Lord and want to serve Him in every moment. And they know how often I fail.

But there is forgiveness.... forgiveness from the Lord and from each other!

And a chance to choose joy, gentleness, love and longsuffering the next time!!

It totally figures that these are part of the verses we are working on memorizing together... funny how that always works out :)

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud  or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.                                                                 1Corinthians 13: 4-7

Guess what 10 Commandment, Getting Married & being Anna

So we've been memorizing the 10 Commandments this summer. Sort of taking one a week, when its a quiet week... LOL, still waiting for one of those!!!

I shared in the the Weekly Wrap-up that they've really liked playing the game of guessing the missing commandment. But the funniest thing is Chris and Lydia getting super excited about knowing the missing commandment but not the exact wording...

so guess these commandments...

  • You shall not harm.
  • You should not steal someone else's wife.
  • You should not have hate in your heart.

***********************************************************************
Lydia and Chris were wrestling, or maybe it was dancing?, in the hallway. I walked by and reminded them to be gentle to one another:)

That's about when I heard Lydia ask,"Hey Chris, lets pretend that we are getting married [must have remembered dancing at Uncle Eric's wedding.... and Chris groans!] ... except we don't have to kiss on the lips!"

**********************************************************************
Lydia and I were talking about a time when she "sulked". We started talking about Sunday afternoon when Anna got to go to a birthday party and she didn't get to go;)

Lydia: I wish I was Anna!

me: really?

Lydia: No, I don't want to be Anna because she don't like dogs!

**LOL!! I thought it was cute that the 1st thing she didn't like about Anna was that Anna doesn't like dogs!

************************************************************************
Nate (15 months) isn't much of a talker, but he definitely lets me know what he wants through "grunting" and pointing!

His newest form of communication.... grabbing my pant leg (preferably a cargo pocket) and trying to PULL me where he wants me to go;) Super cute... not always possible when my hands are full or when I'm trying to cook a meal!!

Tiny Talk Tuesday

Anna (6 yrs) was practicing her Awana verses in the van on the way to Awana. She was working on two separate verses on in Jeremiah and one in Levitus, but every time she would say the reference she's say "Luke-a- miah."

We'd correct her and she'd giggle and then try it again. But she's start again with "Luke-a-miah".

***************************************************************
On the way home from Grammie's house on Saturday, Anna recognized where we were a couple of miles from the house. So she started to give "hints" to Chris and Lydia about where we were.

Anna said,"Chris and Lydia, do you see anything that you have seen before?"

And then as we approaches our little town....
Anna asked, "What town is this?"
Chris said loudly and confidently, "Bethlehem!"

****************************************************************
In my post yesterday, you might have noticed Lydia's (3 yrs) newest boo-boo. She really busted her bottom and top lips inside and out, and cut her top front gum!! When we first saw her, there was BLOOD pouring from her mouth.

Once we got her cleaned up a bit and could tell what some of the injuries were, we also started working on calming her down. Finally the thing that worked was reminding her that she heals fast, like her scrape on her elbow from last week was already starting to heal.

So at church on Sunday, one of our church members asked how her lip was and Lydia responded, "It's healing fast!"

Poor little thing! But I'm soo thankful she was OK!! And that she seems fine with her injuries b/c she's "healing"!
*****************************************************************
And this is how you can find Lydia completing her schoolwork during the day!! Wearing her little "sweetie pie"!

I thought it was sweet!!

I told you....

A couple of days ago I mentioned that the kids had enjoyed listening to a reading Luke 2 from a CD that Brian had picked up FREE somewhere. Everytime we have been in the car the last 2 weeks they have asked to listen to it numerous times... over and over.

I have to admit that I am a little surprised that they request and listen to it soo much. And it has sparked some conversations about Jesus' birth which have been fun and natural teaching moments.... ahh, don't you love those:)

Anyway, on Christmas morning as we were traveling to see my siblings, the kids requested to listen to the Christmas Story. In the back I heard Chris reciting some of the passage....

The video is a just a piece of the recording. It's hard to hear and he was doing it quietly with the CD! But even for him to mouthing part of the verses of Luke 2 was very, very SWEET to hear:)

Oh and I love his expressions afterward, when he realizes I was recording him:)

This CD was definitely a great find!! And has been a wonderful way to keep our Christmas season focused on our Savior coming as a baby!!

Grocery Shopping Antics

Ok, let me start of by saying I adore my children and most days LOVE the stage we're in:) I cherish the sweet moments and still giggle about the funny moments.... but grocery shopping is just a hassle.....

Grocery shopping was OK when I had Christoper in the baby seat, Anna walking and Lydia in the Snuggly.... ha hahaa, I never thought I'd say that!!!!!

But now I have Christopher and Anna both loose (at one time throwing packaged ham into the cart) and Lydia in the seat digging through the groceries, mashing the bread.... it was just a little chaotic... especially when I caught Christopher with a pack of butter in his hands (ALLERGY food) and Anna about to open a case containing bulk peanuts (AHH.. more ALLERGY foods). Let's say the cashier was very gracious as well.... thank goodness, with Christopher hanging off the card reader and spinning the bagging carousel. I'm walking out the door....grateful we haven't broken ANYTHING.... and the door checker stops me and says,

"You have very beautiful children."

AT that time I realize Lydia is quiet because she is calling China on my pay-per-minute cell phone and so I get it back from her. And we leave the store with a wailing baby. She wailed all the way through the parking lot and while I buckled her in the van (as an acquaintance from town who I had just invited to VBS walks pass)! Finally everyone and everything is loaded into the van, I turn on the car and hear :
In this world you will have trouble,
in this world you will have trouble,
take heart, take heart, I have overcome the world,
take heart, take heart, I have overcome the world...... (from John 16:33)
Another translation for trouble is "trials".... and like I started the post. I LOVE my life, where we are and my "trials" are minor and even blessings compared to what others around me are going through!!! But I still have challenges daily and what a blessing to know that our Lord has overcome all and desires for us to have peace.

For those interested... I wasn't listening to the radio but my favorite set of CDs.... they're called Seeds. And I've memorized soo many verses since last Thanksgiving when I started collecting them. Soon, hopefully, I'll be highlighting them on Simple and hopefully have a giveaway and coupons:) They've such a blessing for me, Brian and the children:)

And this is one of the reasons our trip to the grocery store was a little nuts:) This is what happened on our 20 minute trek back home:

They actually listen

Well the last few weeks I'd been on a mission to teach the kids John 3:16 (I was teaching Christopher just a few lines). Anyway, I posted them and randomly throughout the day I'd say the verse a couple of times....and I wished I was more consitent.

So this afternoon I asked Anna to say "John 3 :16" with me. And the little monkey did it!!! She had been listening and learning the verse.......So the whole time I was thinking I was "wasting" my time or that she was too distracted or too young, the child was soaking it in :) Praise God!!!

So I quizzed her tonight while she was finishing her "nightly routine"....hehehehe!! You know..... Deut. does say to teach your children when they are laying down and sitting, although I'm not sure they had this in mind :)

She did have a little help!!!! But pretty good since I had thought nothing was sinking in!!! She's still a little shaky with the ending....in fact while we were practicing tonight a couple of times her last word was "friendship".....so it went like this,"shall not perish but have everlasting friendship." he heheee

Oh, this is how Anna finally fell asleep this evening...my little bookworm:)
