Trying to Stay Organized - Home school Edition

Each day we head into the school room (or lay on the living room couches) and "do" school work. But there comes a point every day when we all are asking, "Are we done yet?" or Momma's asking, "Did we get it all done yet?"

It's also about that time when the phone starts ringing, the stomachs start growling, the dog starts barking and the kids are running around like wild animals (because they think they are done)...

and Momma's brain is fried.... she can quote Animaniacs, read Chicka-Chicka Boom,Boom blindfolded, knows the Bible verses of the week, has solved Anna's incredibly challenging work problems and sings all the Shurley English jingles by then. But "Did they finish?"

So to give some organization to my day and have the answer to that all important daily question (ha ha haa), I have some helps and ways to stay on top of the kids work. I thought I'd share;)

One big one around here is "everything in it's place":) While I wished it applied to laundry and the stuff that accumulates on the kitchen counters, it DEFINITELY applies to our school books. And a simple, hand-me-down shelf does the trick for us... each kid with their own cubby and their do-done charts on top with stuff to file/finish underneath.

Some of us need a little more visual reminders of what tasks still need to be done!

This is our take on the do-done chart.

I made little cards with a subject title and graphic on one side and a smiley face on the other;) And then cut the cards to fit into a 9-pocket baseball card holder (had some extra from couponing).

Simple, easy! And those days when everyone's hard at work, it's nice to glance down and see what each one needs to complete!

These sit on top of the cubbies and are easily visible.

I will say that they don't get used daily. But when we are starting the year or have times when they start asking "are we done yet?" these do-done charts are very helpful for us.

What do we actually accomplish and how do I know and the kids know WHAT to do???

For years, I have been keeping a very simple subject plans in a simple chart I found a long time ago. I like that I have room for all three kids individual assignments and  our "together" work on ONE day per WEEK.

When looking for a planner, it was one of my requirements that it's simple and I have a week at time on one page. I like this because often tasks/projects get moved around during the week... but by Friday it's all done! And I feel like I get a better view of the day/week when I can see everyone's work at one time:)

So here's a sample week. Regrettably I didn't have anything planned for my middle two to read.... no worries!! They have plenty in the library bag but I just didn't have anything specific to read this week.

As I planned for this year, I was reminded of one of the blessings of home schooling is that the kids can work ahead if they are able (or desire) to do so. And if THEY know what their assignments are they can start working on them before I ask:) And if they know our schedule for the week, they will better understand why our workload is a little heavier on some days and what days we get to meet with other home schoolers:)

So I made them their own re-usable schedule templates stored as the 1st page of their daily notebooks. Each weekend I fill in their schedule to match what I have written in my own planner for them. It's laminated so it gets used week after week and I write on it with wet erase markers.

Yes, I do write in games/practices, lessons, library visits, church functions and home school outings because they want to know when these activities are going to happen and they affect our days, too!

And yes, I am low-tech:) I'm sure there are some great spreadsheets that can be printed off daily/weekly... maybe I'll go that route... someday.

For now this works well for us;) And this Momma is thankful for these little ways to organize our schooling that make a BIG difference in the efficiency of our days;)

Our Daily Notebook

IMG_9888
Chris working on date, time and temperature sheet!
One of my goals this home school year is to be more INTENTIONAL!!!

Most of what I plan... we do!

But a lot of things I want to do, but think I'll just "remember" or "add in", doesn't usually happen...

like practicing skip counting, doing a calendar time, practice/teach cursive or start memorizing all the US Presidents.

So to be intentional about some "little" things, I've decided to add a Daily Notebook to our mornings.

There are tons of free materials out there to put into a Daily Notebook. I am so very thankful for the home school moms out there that are willing to make their printables available... it's definitely a ministry to those of us un-"designers".

So I made some.. well, 3! And they use them:)

Here is what is included in our Daily Notebooks... (and where I found them)

Calendar
Daily Info. Worksheet
Number of the Day (where they make math facts with the date)
Cursive Days of the Week
Print (and Cursive for Anna) Months of the Year
Prayer request ( lined loose leaf in a plastic sleeve)
History Sentence of the Week  (lined loose leaf in a plastic sleeve)
Skip Counting
US  Presidents
Cursive Letter (for Chris and Lydia)
Daily Grams Grammar 4th (for Anna)
Drawing of the Day (Chris right now, but the girls are asking for this sheet, too)

IMG_9866The kids have willingly done their notebooks these 2 weeks. They do it together most mornings and it's a time when they "get it done" but while chatting:)

I like how laid back it is but they are still covering a lot of information and tasks. I love that the middle two are starting cursive in a very low pressure way... they like practicing their letter each day... a few tries each time:) And Anna is getting the extra Grammar practice that she enjoys:)

After some training, I'm praying this will be an activity that the kids will complete together with me in the room but maybe not right.next.to.them !  And maybe it will be the 15-20 minutes I can use to sit down with Nate and work with him a bit:)

Supplies Organizer Using what we Have

Since sometime in the fall when the weather got cooler, the kids and I began home schooling in the dining room...

the same room we eat all our meals :(

The room was freezing each morning, even with using our central heat and a space heater. With busy little Nate, I wasn't comfortable with the space heater and all the toys he'd use to mess with it and stack around it.

The school room also needed some "toddler"-proofing and since we thought we'd be moving in just a couple months it seemed just easier to move to the kitchen table for this "short season". LOL... little did I know how long this season has become.

One thing I desperately needed was to have the basics within an arm's reach. Every time we needed glue, a new pencil, scissors or a ruler we had to go into the school room... moved the blanket around the edge of the door, get our stuff and then tuck the blanket back under the door. For retrieving our daily books it was aggravating enough...but for just a pencil it was crazy... I had to come up with something!

And being the "penny pincher" that I tend to be, I decided to use what we already had around to solve the problem:

coin cups (reused fruit cup cups)

And ... Voila!!

not very pretty, but  it's been perfect this week!

When we set-up the new school room, I'm sure we'll have a different system!

But for now,  we have almost everything we need for our morning work in the basket. So it works for us;)

Focus Friday

Focus Friday

This is one mom's idea to have weekly goals for each week:) I have a LIST of goals from organzing to home tasks to goals with the kids:) So I thought it might be better to take care of these "little things" one week at a time:)

My goals for the next week are:

* Put together my coupon binder and organize my coupons in it:)

* Sort through Christopher's shelf:) Put NEW labels on the bins where needed:) Oh it's such a mess and all the toys are all mixed up in it.... maybe I should add another goal.....

* Train Christopher to put his toys in the right bins:)

So ask me Next friday if I got anything done:) LOL

How we get OUT the door

Whenever I'm out with the kids, I ALWAYS get comments. They say," boy, you've got a lot of "helpers" *wink, wink*" or "are they yours?"

One funny comment the other day was from a grandmother keeping her two granddaughters. She said, "How in the world are you out of your house this early with all those kids?" .... hahhaa

First let me explain that I ONLY have 3 kiddies!!! They are young, but only 3... imagine a momma with like 5 or 6!!! Second, it was 11am!!!! Good grief, I wanted to be out of the house by 9:30 or 10am!! So 11am for me was LATE:)

In the rush to get to church or into the car, Brian had enough of the Japanese lets-all-push onto-the-subway routine happening at our house with our three little ones!! So he trained the kids to stand 3 or 4 feet from the door and wait for their names to be called.....

The other day I was watching this tradition/routine and was just touched by the orderliness and how much the kids LOVE doing this...... it's just soo cute. And I think Brian has also enjoyed this routine.... no more pushing and bunching at the door and he likes to compliment each one during their turn, which is always nice for a parent.... we want to encourage more than we have to correct:)

So I tried to video it, I wish I would have had two cameras to get the kids faces as they eagerly awaited their names to be called:)

I wish everything at our house could be as orderly as leaving the house with Daddy:)

Attempting Organization

Well much like I thought I was patient and flexible before I had kids, I also thought I was organized.....well maybe I liked being organized! But with kids (at least three of them) being organized is the difference (in our house) between comfortable and cluttered. Or out the door in 10 minutes versus 20 minutes!! And being a Momma who likes to get "out" (walks, grocery store, park), I need organization!!! And I'm still learning how to do it ;)

So I have been in this "Get Organized" mode. I've been organizing kitchen drawers, kids' clothes, craft supplies, etc!! I have a few who are joking me about being pregnant....nope!!! Shoes have been my latest task!!! With three kids and two adults, church shoes, play shoes, casual shoes and slippers, we can have quite a mess at the front door. I thought I was doing well with keeping the kids shoes on a rubbermaid container. But it looked so BAD......

So after I just was tired of the mess I started looking online for a solution. And found the idea of a shoe cubbie!!! I mean we see them all the time at indoor playgrounds and daycares. I dragged the family to Target and lo and behold a shoe cubbie...on sale!!!! That night I started to pull the pieces out and found one already dented, so the boys ran back yesterday and got me a new one (Thanks fellas!!).

I've had it up a couple of hours. It's much smaller than I was hoping for. But I wanted it for the kids' shoes and it fits a pair of kids' shoes...maybe a really narrow pair of adults'. But it will be really nice to keep the shoes at the front door and in pairs, so during the rush to get out we have BOTH shoes in one spot...not having to dig through the pile will be nice!!! We will see how it works for us :)
