After graduating with a degree to teach and substituting to get through seminary, I had it it my heart to homeschool. I just loved the idea of being able to teach my own children, when we wanted and what we wanted. I prayed that the home environment would be less distracting by peers/agendas, more focused on the basics and create a deep desire to enjoy learning:)
Then the kiddos starting coming along!! Spending time with them and teaching them "little kid" stuff became fun! When friends started sending their kids to a local preschool, I started really working with the kids so they wouldn't get behind :) Little did I know I was setting us up to really homeschool... my kids started the journey to read at 3 years old... because they asked! But it's a slow journey for us... we go at their pace.. but I have readers;)
There are plenty of challenges to homeschooling and making it work each day... we are learning to extend much GRACE to one another and to lay aside our personal "to do" lists (thats for me!!). But I am soo thankful for the opportunity I have to be their teacher!! To learn with them!! To see them "get it"!! And to grow with them!
And now after almost 4 years of homeschooling (if you count those early preschool years!!) I know more about homeschooling, our kids and myself and know that I have a TON more to learn:)
We try to follow the classical model laid out by The Well-Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer. It's my go-to source for how we school and what we will use each year! We have loved all the resources suggested in that book and stick with those because they work for us. We also love using read aloud books that fit into our history topics or are kid classics!
