Tiny (but determined) Talk Tuesday

I think Nate is already showing promise as a lawyer.


Nate (4 yrs): Mom, do you want me to get in an accident and the police to come when I drive  a car?

Mom: No.

Nate: Well then... I need to watch Mickey Mouse Club because that tells me how to drive stuff.


LOL!! A very convincing argument, aimed straight at this mom's desire to protect her children. He is good! And extremely persistent.

On the tough side of Nate's "gift" of argument... is the argument part! Phew!

Teaching and trying to mold his heart  (his desires and then his words)  every.single.conversation  all.day.long  is exhausting.

It makes me thankful for the mommy wisdom God has allowed me to be exposed to these last few months through a conference, carving out time for reading my Bible, some pretty inspiring blogs and godly motherhood books.

Now just to continue to apply all that wisdom into our days.  Not to grow weary, but to press on! Love, correct, love, referee an argument, love, guide, love, cook dinner, love, bathe, read, love, snuggle and tuck them in for the night;)

You will always harvest what you plant... 

 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.

Wordless Wednesday - Pool Prep, Little Brother Style

One-Sided Freckles

For over a year or so, I've noticed a cute (and a little alarming) aspect of Nate's little face. If you look closely, he only has freckles on the left side of his face!!

I love freckles! I love to tell the story that was told to me about my dad winning the freckle contests many summers growing up. And most of the time loosing only to his brother:) LOL!! Freckles tie me (and my kids) to my dad.


Nate's little face though with only one side spotted with freckles is adorable!

But a little odd....

how would a kid get freckles only on one side?

It would mean that his left side is more exposed to the sun than his right. And often enough to actually bring the freckles out! We are big sunscreen users when the kids play/swim outside... so it's not like we have purposely not used sunscreen on the left! Nope!

The only thing I can think it would be is where he sits in the van?

Nate is still in a 5-point harness car seat that doesn't move to other spots often. It has worked the best for him to sit right behind the driver:) So his left side is facing the window as we drive in the van.

That's the alarming part. He is actually getting sun that is affecting his skin pigment:/ Crazy!

Maybe we need to include sunscreen during extended van excursions?

Anyway, it's kind of cute;) But of course, I'm totally biased because he's my kiddo:)

Nate's 4th Birthday!!

While the blog has remained quiet, we've been no where close to quiet around here!!

One of the most anticipated dates in our house is May 1st!! Nate has been able to remember his birth date for months now asking us, "How many days until May 1st?" And celebrate we did:)

It's been a little bittersweet this year.... 4 is soo old! He's not a baby any longer which means we don't have any babies in the house anymore:/

Nate is full of personality!!  FULL to the max:) He gets tons of comments has he roller skates with our home school group because of all of his expressions and antics.

And his little mouth gets him in soo much trouble (and causes us to giggle when he's not looking)! I think it has to do with his name and being the youngest who is determined to be heard. Oh and he is a loud talker... he has three volumes- loud, louder and off! Thankfully at church we've had enough experience now for him to "try" to whisper!

Speaking of church, he has come a long way in attending his class. When we first started attending our church (after moving) Nate wouldn't even go into his class. We had to sit outside the class... and sometimes he'd go in for snack time... sometimes! Brian sat with him during Sunday school and then I had him for Service (sometimes in the sanctuary and sometimes not!). We've kept our kids with us in Service for most of their lives... so we're used to packing "quiet activities" and snack. And thankfully Nate has finally adjusted and the last few months I haven't had to leave. He is also happily attending his Sunday School and Wednesday night classes with this momma with him... but he's talking now with his teachers/friends, playing without me at his side and I've actually have left him alone in class for a few minutes... small victories! But I am soo grateful for the teachers of his classes that have welcomed me and have been so sweet to Nate as he adjusts.

We also had a hard couple of months during the 3's! He was literally attached to me and seemed very angry/frustrated when I couldn't meet his needs immediately. I am thankful for my gracious friends who would try to appease him when I couldn't, or endured the fussing with us. They reminded me that it was a "season"! And they were right... I loved him, was firm with him and soon it was in the past. Wish all season would pass as simply:)

It has been soo cool seeing Nate just blend in with the older kids at home and during home school group meetings/outings! He wants to keep up with the older kids soo bad.... so he does;) In fact, he's been riding his bike with two wheels for months just needing help getting started and don't you know on his birthday day he jumped on and went! Alone! All around! Just as fast as the others!

He's big enough to keep up and small enough to still climb into my lap! And sometimes I get 100 kisses:)

Celebrate we did... simply this year!

First we had an early meal with Grandma and Grandaddy since we were down visiting just days before May 1st. Nate was taken to Walmart to pick out a gift. We thought for sure that he'd choose some Legos, but he surprised us all by picking out a new bicycle helmet which he really did need;)

Then we came home and quickly got in a lunch party before his friend left for a grandparent visit. We had the whole family over for a simple lunch on the Wednesday before his birthday. I hated rushing it but it was the friend he had said over and over that he wanted to come over ti eat his cake;)

On Nate's birthday, the girls made muffins for breakfast. We did a little school in the morning! I introduced him to the chore chart... he was excited. And it's time for him to start getting into morning routines;) He spent a lot of time outside riding his bike with his new helmet! Soon it was time for pizza making and a family dinner!

Simple, sweet, low stress and we got to enjoy our time together!

One of my most memorable conversations with him on his birthday was when he asked, "Do they [his siblings] have to obey me now because I am 4?"

Me: They obey Mommy, Daddy and God, not you. But you can help them do the right things and they can listen to your help.

Nate: "When I am 10, do I have to obey you and Daddy anymore?"

Me: "In the Bible it says to honor your parents. That means you need to obey them when you are growing up and respect them when you are a grown up. "

Nate: "Wreeally. Oh, come on, people!"

There was an older man in earshot and I could hear him chuckling;) Just a normal conversation with Nate trying to figure it all out;)

Nate's  Stats
Nate is  39.5 inches tall and weighs 37.5  lbs!

Nate wears 3T and 4T... kind of in between sizes so he tends to wear both. And he also has a couple of t-shirts that are hand-me-downs from Chris a little early:/ But he usually thinks Chris is really cool and love to wear anything that Chris would have worn:)

Schooling is very simple (and lately sporadic). It often consists of reading books from Before Five In a Row, doing an activity or two, working on a page of a pre-reader (beginning sounds practice), a game and then he's about done. 15-20 minutes:) And then while I work with the older kids he does puzzles, plays with Duplos, Legos, Lincoln Logs, draws/cuts/glues.... stays busy and content until his tummy starts rumbling for lunch!

Tiny Talk - Not a Baby & "egg" Hunt

2 weeks and 3 days until he's 4! How is that possible?????

Nate and I were talking about the days and weeks left until his birthday and he said,"Oh, why can't it only be 2 days left?"

And taking the crew to the grocery store is finally getting easier and easier;) The older ones mess with each other sometimes but have learned it to their benefit to help me so we get out of the store more quickly.

Nate though is still learning:/ While he wants to walk freely about, usually he ends up in the front basket where he is contained and can't wander. But that often is NOT what he wants and is protested loudly by cries of "I am NOT a baby!" LOL!!

So yes, even though it IS getting easier.... it's still not chaos-free!

And then he gets into the car after the grocery shop and does this:)

We went to a friend's church for an egg hunt on Saturday! We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the kids all had friends to play with! Larry did a great job telling the story of the cross and presenting the Gospel. And then the kids began the hunt!

It was much different than we are used to;) They had scattered the candy all over the ground instead of putting it all in eggs. They joked about it "cutting out the middle man" but it was a huge blessing for us.

Most holidays and food allergies just don't mesh well:( Our kids are either put at risk getting into something or left out or awkwardly "separated out". We were always thankful for a safe Easter day at a neighbor's house that made us skip Easter events for many years. Of course every hard Easter has been well-meaning.....

 but food allergies DO make us different and DO at times separate us from others:/ It's just reality.

To be honest, I was just going to let my kids hunt eggs like everyone else and then help them separate the candy. I know, I was kind of leery but I hated for them to have another weird Easter function.... and last year we did it that way with no issues (but they had not used chocolate/peanut candy).

So seeing just candy scattered on the grass was awesome for us;)

 The girls got to hunt, too! No pictures of Chris because he stayed home to be with his daddy.


And Nate cracked me up:) He only picked up the kinds he liked. And then at first only one of each kind so others could have some too:)

BFIAR : Angus Lost

Nate and I have been using Before Five in a Row to "row" a book about every two weeks or so. I work only 15 or so minutes with him individually each day so making a book last 2 weeks or so is very easy!  Nate is also really into letters so sometimes he just likes doing activities with letters and not our BFIAR activities!

Right now it's just exposure and enjoying learning. He's also working a little about listening/following directions while we work together:)

We had soo much fun the last few weeks with Angus Lost by Marjorie Flack that I thought I'd share some of what we did! I'll share by topic/week... I'm very simple with pre-school... again making learning fun!

When we first read through Angus LOst we talked about getting lost and what the kids (because all the kids were gathered around Nate and I by the end of the book) should do if they got "lost" at a store or park. It's one of those conversations that parents need to have. The older kids and I have had the conversation many times but I don't remember being intentional with Nate about the getting lost and going with strangers! So a needed conversation!

During our first week of Angus Lost we also talked about D and dogs.  We read through Angus Lost each day and made all the animal sounds:) We played with "D" magnets. We tried to spell dog;)

I also collected some "D" items in a bag for a "game". Nate had to reach in the bag and pick up one to name. I put a wooden letter D, a plastic doughnut, play dishes, a toy dog and other random items. Nate's favorites were his dinosaur, two dimes and a dollar;)

We also talked about dogs. We looked a dog encyclopedia that had a TON of dog breeds. We read through a book about caring for dogs and then Nate made a chart to take care of Jack for the week.

We also had a few "dog" activities:)

An amazing resource for us was a printable packet from Homeschool Creations made for Angus Lost. We used MANY things from the printables including the story sequencing, matching cards, maze, pre-writing activities, and this mini-reader! For the mini-reader, I copied it and glue the individual pieces to construction paper. Then laminated and made it into a flip book. The little Angus (and milk) pieces I laminated separated and had the back waxed so they would stay in place and Nate can do it over and over and over and over;) LOL!!

 

Another fun activity Nate liked... that I didn't get a picture of... was sorting  dogs with long legs and dogs with short legs;) Too funny! And we also used the pieces to match them with the correct breed in the dog encyclopedia.... Lydia helped us with that activity:) We printed the pieces from this Angus Lost packet!

Our second week included some snow days ... which are never too productive... and that's OK!! Perfect for a week to talk about caves and making one in the school room:)

Everyone had to climb through:) They made cave drawings and bats (and brought bears) to complete the cave;)

There are soo many cute kids dog books out there...  we included Harry the Dirty Dog and Flash the Dash during our weeks reading about Angus.

After visiting another town's library and found Angus and the Ducks by Flack as well:) That find got my brain going since Angus Lost's setting was winter and Angus and the Ducks is spring/summer .... we did a third week with Angus talking about SEASONS:) oh, yes! I just love how many things can be "studied" from just one book (or two).

We talked about a season a day using a couple of really cute season books from our library! So why not make a season book;)

Using season cards, we matched letters and "wrote" each season on the page!

We also borrowed a Season Box from our local ChildLinks office. From the box, Nate loved sorting the pieces into what season it matched. And then he surprised me one morning by tracing all the words on the 12 cards... I've got another writer;)

As you can see some weeks we get a lot done... other weeks our actual BFIAR-time is much less! There is no hurry, no rush, just us carving out a few minutes to spend with Nate doing "his" school when the others are starting their individual work:)

Nate is very content during school time playing with Legos, cars, puzzles and whatever else he finds to do. He is also starting to sit with us for Bible time (a work in progress). And when we're needing some quiet, Nate watches educational shows and DVDs. He is NEVER still or bored!

We started Caps for Sale today.... we'll see where it takes us this week (and probably the next week or so)!

Hugs, Kisses and Animal Mtg at the Manger

This morning I was greeted with a little toothy smile:)

And as we snuggled for a bit before we started the day, Nate asked, "Where is Daddy?"

Brian put the kids to bed last night while I attended a meeting, so Nate remembered being with his daddy as he fell asleep. Then Nate had slept in until 8am which is when Brian starts his day at work so he missed seeing Brian in the morning.

Nate continued, "So you are going to stay with us today, while Daddy is at work?" LOL! It was funny that he was asking this.... hmm, we have the same arrangement 5 days a week;)

Then he added, "You can stay with us because we give you hugs and kisses!" Definitely the BEST way to start the morning and the BEST reminder of the blessings of this season of getting to stay with them:)

I'm totally not ashamed that we still have up Christmas decorations!! I love Christmas and taking down all the pretty and meaningful decor makes our house look soo bare. They will come down sometime this week (or next week!) though:/

Meanwhile, Nate is still playing with the Little People Manger set we bring out every Christmas!! He loved the set this year. He's take it out of his "busy bin" and ask,"Will you tell me the story?" Music to this momma's ears... just beautiful and simple! Christmas!

This week I found a meeting happening at the manger scene... a meeting of animals.

I had to see what the "hub-bub" was about :)

I know it was a silly arrangement of Nate's, but in that moment it really hit me when I saw they surrounded Him... Baby Jesus!

I was still... I was reminded of how we should have Jesus in the middle of it all. That even a small child knows that Jesus is the most important person! And in this case Nate thought even the animals gave Jesus all the attention.

I love stopping to see sweet moments instead of just rushing through my days and tasks. I am VERY guilty of always being in a rush with an impossible "to do" list each day. And I am thankful for the encouragement and reminders I get when I take the time to stop and enjoy and even look for the small blessings among the messes and the every day moments with my kids.

Almost...

While its a "rite of passage" to learn the ABC Song... I've never really pushed it with my kids since I found early in teaching my kids about reading that the phonics of the letters and the ability to identify them as bigger priorities than just memorizing a song!

But Nate loves the ABC Song!

So he practices it often... over and over every day! Usually we have a book, poster, or his ABC Train puzzle in front of him as we sing so he gets the chance to correlate the name of the letter with the letter itself.

After a couple of days of asking if I could record him singing his ABCs, he finally agreed;)

He  almost has it;) And this Momma thinks its too cute!!


And I know I'll treasure this is in a couple of years as he gets distracted in the middle with his "taggie" blanket. And needs a little help:) And his little voice!!

Tiny Talkin'

Nate has been talking letters... I soo started working with my older kids earlier:/ Guess it's just what happens when you're the 4th kid:) So we've started reading letter books to start the journey. In a conversation about "L" the same letter that starts Lydia's name. Nate announced "Me not have "L" in me name."

I tried to explain to him that in his full name "Nathaniel" there is an "L".

Nate responded, "Me name not that word. Me name is Nate!" I guess we know which name he prefers:)

While in a conversation during summer devotion time about Samuel hearing God call him at night, I asked the kids, "Does God sleep at night?"

The kids answered "No!" in unison:)

Chris then added: "You mean God is noctural?"

I explained that noctural usually refers to animals that rest during the day and hunt at night but that God doesn't have to sleep and we can talk to Him anytime.

Chris, still trying to think it through, added more "That's because God rested on the 7th day when He was making the world."

Love them making connections and the conversations (and seeing those little wheels turning in their little brains)!

On one of our visits to my mom's house, Nate asked if Pey was resting upstairs in his room. I was a little surprised by his question but I took the opportunity to tell him that Pey wasn't with us anymore but was with Jesus in Heaven where he didn't have to rest in bed.

Nate asked,"Tan he come see us?"

I explained that he got to stay in Heaven with Jesus forever.

Nate stopped and said very matter of factly, "But him not bring his truck!"

And Nate is right. Pey's truck will stay with Grammie for the time being. It does remind me of Pey every time we pull up next to it;) I like the memories:) And was so thankful my kiddos have sweet Pey memories and share them with us!

Mower Sleeper... strikes again

I know I'd shown this before... but at 2 Nate slept in Brian's arms on the mower. And it's soo sweet to see him now at 3... still falling asleep in his Daddy's arms doing his most favorite thing in the WORLD... ride the mower with Daddy.

If he could just stay awake to enjoy the ride.

Gotta love the mower... Brian serviced it himself... we're totally keeping this until it doesn't move;) It may not be pretty... but it works (for now)!!

It's just something about the loud noise, the gas engine smell and Daddy's arms that makes it a cozy spot for a nap;) Daddy likes the time, too;)

Looks like we're not the only ones who are exhausted!

How Can it Be?? Nate is Three!!

How is it possible that our "baby" is 3 today???

I remember those long days for a year that I begged God for another chance to have a baby. And then on one day before heading to the dentist... just on  a whim, I took a pregnancy test to be sure I was ok to get x-rays. Imagine my surprise when I WAS pregnant!!  

I was in tears... joyful tears! Tears that God had answered this insignificant woman's heartfelt prayers. Tears that I would get to carry and mother another child. Tears that my body was ok. Just lots of joyful, thankful tears... aren't those the best:)

And now I'm just in awe that 3 years and just about 9 months later I have this little guy in my life:)

He is a constant reminder of the fact that God DOES answer prayers.... in His time, when He knows we are ready:)  I'm not sure I was ready to accept another crazy, wild, determined little boy the 1st time I asked God for another baby:)

And boy, oh boy do I have a busy and determined little boy:)

He is lot like his big brother and much different at the same time!! Like Chris, Nate loves being outside finding sticks, helping their daddy and exploring. Nate also has a story telling ability... he has told us some whoppers of finding purple snakes that bite him and playing with Titus on days when we didn't see Titus. Oh, and they are both still into dinosaurs;)

Nate is different though, too!! He's not as laid back as Chris. He sticks with a task longer, like one afternoon he worked for hours with Brian and I clearing brush and stacking wood. He also sticks with an idea longer.... he'll ask us 100 times for something in a matter of minutes and he's not always happy when our answer is not in his favor:)

He is still in a slightly timid stage sticking with us in new situations until he is comfortable and he still isn't going into his Sunday School class (sometime even when we'll go with him).

And he talks in his sleep... a little strange to hear him but funny what he is dreaming about.. usually his siblings:)

 I love this new, exciting learning stage!! Last year he was saying just few words and knew a handful of "songs"... but now he is a chatterbox; he can and will say anything;)  This stage definitely comes with challenges as my little boy is very opinionated especially when he is sleepy. And he is determined to keep up with his older siblings during their adventures; he can often been found in the woods catching frogs, bugs, looking for snakes and playing Civil War with them:)

We adore our Nate! 

And are soo thankful for him;)

He can't Sound Out da Words

Laying in bed with Nate on a night when he did get a nap, we read a few books.  I let him watch Goodnight Moon on youtube, and then gave him "space" to settle down in order to fall asleep. It's then that he says to me...

"Mommy, what dis say? Me not know how to sound out de words."

LOL!!  Spoken like a true preschooler who hears his siblings practicing their reading on a daily basis;)

 Can you guess what tomorrow is????

BFIAR - Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?

Nate and I were very excited to "row" another book... Jesse Bear, What Will you Wear? by Nancy Carlstrom.

Again, since it takes me a while to prepare his materials and find time to sit and work with him, we end up "rowing" for a couple of weeks instead of just one;) So this was definitely not planned and put together in one weekend or done in one week:)

We read through Jesse Bear at least 3 times each week;) Talking about all sorts of things as we read, like activities at different parts of the day, or Jesse Bear's daddy coming home from work, "ants in the pants", eating at the table, etc! It really is a sweet and fun book:)

We thought it was funny one day when Nate dressed a little like Jesse Bear:) And I don't know where it was the cooler weather or the influence of the book, but Nate did dress a couple of mornings... yippe, he's becoming more civilized!

Nate LOVES the little cards that I printed and laminated from Homeschool Creations:) He did soo much with that one set of matching cards;)

We matched and played Memory with them....

we found them in the story... and Nate couldn't resist putting "the rose between his toes".

He also liked the plate and food printable from Homeschool Share.

I printed off the pieces, laminated and then waxed the back so the pieces would stay in place. The plate was glued to a piece of construction paper to make it look pretty and to give it more stability.

Nate liked to make Jesse Bear's lunch plate as I read that part of the book. We talked about the veggies and fruits as well.

One week we bought celery for him to try. He's not a fan:/ Thankfully he has a big brother and a mother who like celery and our choice of nutbutters.

I realized I didn't take a picture of a tracing sheet from Homeschool CReations that Nate worked on a few times. It's teaching kids one-to-one correspondence as well as learning pencil control and pre-letter formation by tracing lines.

At fist he was very frustrated he couldn't get right.on.the.line... we have a perfectionist on our hands:/  It seemed though that he would choose that activity to work "alone" and he did a little better at least with his frustration:)

I also tried to introduce the letter B to our study. B for Bear:)

I love the printable ABC Find It from 1+1+1=1. Again we laminated and waxed so they lasted through the drool (yes, he is still drooling) and would stay in place:) He liked it... I look forward to finding more ways to use this colorful resource!

From Homeschool Share, I found a cute ABC laundry printable. I copied onto colored computer paper and then laminated the set! I gathered up some clothes pins and taped some yarn to a corner of our wall.

Nate was a little young (or not ready) for the actual matching of the letters. So for him I wanted to help him pick out the B's. He also practiced some fine motor and problem solving skills by trying to pin the letters up onto the line;)

Just like Snowy Day and the Truck book, Nate has started finishing the lines of this Jesse Bear book;) He really is loving the attention and the games. We keep it simple and try to use all that we have available over and over;) And its precious to see the older ones reading to him from the book box or playing a game of Memory with him;)
